Saturday, February 27: Urban Neighborhood Plant ID Walk- Santa Monica


Nature is literally outside our homes and even in the sidewalks of LA. We will have a casual walk through some neighborhood areas in Santa Monica and see what edibles, medicinal, and ornamental plants we can find. The walk will be about 60-90 minutes with frequent stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk around town in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk.  After the walk, we will have light refreshments made from some of the plants possibly id’ that day.


Meeting place: Outside the library on 21st and Ocean Park Blvd. The address is 2101 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica, 90405.  There is free parking on Ocean Park Blvd.

Sunday, February 28: Wild Beers and Plant ID Walk Workshop


Learn how to become a brewer without using hops, but wild crafted plants instead. Depending on the plants added the brew could determine different outcomes, such as knocking you completely on your rear, to medicinal, etc. We will start with a quick plant id walk and then learn how to make primitive beers right on the spot. I have samples for all to try as I have many different brew batches I have made. The walk will be about 60-90 minutes with frequent stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk. 


Meeting place: Santa Ynez Canyon Trail, 17399 Vereda De La Montuva, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272. Trailhead coordinates: 34.078243, -118.567421 (34° 04′ 41.67″N 118° 34′ 02.71″W. There is free parking in the area around the entrance of the canyon trail.

We will have a casual walk through some neighborhood areas in Venice and see what edibles, medicinal, and ornamental plants we can find. The walk will be about 60-90 minutes with frequent stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk around town in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk.  After the walk, we will have light refreshments made from some of the plants possibly id’ that day at Mystic Journey Bookstore.


Meeting place: Mystic Journey Bookstore 1624 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, CA 90291. There is free parking on Abbot Kinney Blvd, but come early to find parking.

Sunday, March 6: “A Wild Brunch” Plant ID and Workshop


Everyone loves breakfast foods and adding wild foods to the mix even makes the best foodies drool with anticipation. See what a few wild plants could do to make your morning meal even more special. We will start with a walk with frequent stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk around in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk.  After the plant id walk, we will find an area to have brunch together. Come with an appetite as there will be many jams, jellies, pancakes, breads, and hot chocolate.


Meeting place: Topanga State Park Trippet Ranch, We will meet at the end of Entrada Road (not Entrada) in Topanga Canyon at the Trippett Ranch parking lot. From PCH to Topanga Canyon Blvd., turn right, to Entrada Road, turn right again. Continue for 0.7 miles and turn left; follow the State Park signs. Turn left in 0.3 miles into parking lot. Parking in the park is $10 cash.

Sunday, March 13: Forest Plant ID Walk

 

With the new rains, we should be able to see so many wonderful plants growing on this easy trail. I’m anticipating seeing mugwort, blackberry, black sage, buckwheat, fennel, and a California Bay forest. This should be an aromatic and fun walk with lots of stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk around in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk.  After the walk, we will have light refreshments made from some of the plants possibly id’ that day.

Sunday, March 27: Coastal Plant ID Walk- Malibu


It’s not just seaweed and sand that’s on the beach, but so much more you can eat and enjoy! The plant id walk will last about 60-90 minutes with frequent stops and talks. Please bring a notebook and/or phone to take notes and pictures as these are welcome. Also wear comfortable shoes to walk around in as well as appropriate attire as this will be a rain or shine walk.  After the walk, we will have light refreshments made from some of the plants possibly id’ that day.


Meeting Place: From Santa Monica, go north on the PCH to Malibu. Malibu Lagoon State Park starts at the Addison House which you do not want to park in as we aren't meeting there, but go up to Cross Creek Road and turn left (or west) into the park. Parking there can be up to $12, so bring cash as the card machine doesn't always work. If you don't wish to pay for parking, I have seen people park across the street (east) at the Mailbu Market.
