Oral Pathology

The oral and maxillofacial surgeon is called upon to evaluate and diagnose a wide variety of conditions affecting the face, jaws, head, and neck as well as the tissues of the oral cavity. The mouth is an important organ with many different functions. It is also prone to a variety of medical and dental disorders. Changes in the oral mucosa or radiographic abnormalities may indication of a pathologic process.

A biopsy of the area is normally needed and sent for microscopic evaluation by an oral pathologist. Oral pathology is the specialty of dentistry and pathology which deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. An accurate diagnosis is obviously important and occasionally critical to the patient so that the most appropriate treatment can be initiated as soon as possible

A periodic oral health assessment by your dentist is recommended. Should you notice any abnormalities in your mouth, it should be brought to your dentist attention, so that a referral to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon can be made.
